Shape Properties Worksheet: Identify Faces, Edges, and Vertices!
This worksheet introduces the specific vocabulary of 3D geometry, faces, edges, and vertices, asking children to count each feature on shapes like cubes, cones, and spheres. For ages 4-6, learning to describe shapes by their properties rather than just their names builds an early foundation for more formal geometry later in school.
Curriculum
How to use this worksheet
Look at the first 3D shape together and identify a face, a flat surface, an edge, where two faces meet, and a vertex, a pointed corner, pointing to examples on the shape itself. Have your child count the faces, edges, and vertices of that shape and write each number in the boxes provided. Move to the questions asking whether the shape can roll, stack, or slide, having your child think about the shape's properties to answer. Continue through each remaining shape the same way, comparing how the properties differ between shapes like a sphere and a cube.
Materials needed
- Pencil
- Eraser
Extension activities
- •Find real 3D objects around the house, like a ball, a box, or a can, and count their faces, edges, and vertices together.
- •Build 3D shapes using playdough and toothpicks, counting the vertices as you add each toothpick corner.
- •Sort household objects into 'can roll,' 'can stack,' and 'can slide' categories based on their shape properties.
- •Take photos of different 3D shapes found at home and label each with its number of faces and vertices.
- •Compare two shapes side by side, like a cube and a cone, discussing what makes their properties different.
Tips for parents and teachers
Encourage your child to physically trace faces and edges with a finger on a real 3D object, since counting from a flat picture is much harder than counting from something they can hold and turn. Spheres and cones can be especially confusing since they have curved surfaces rather than clearly countable faces, so take extra time discussing those. Connecting the abstract vocabulary to real objects your child already knows, like a soccer ball or a tissue box, makes the terms stick.

Color the 3D Shapes Worksheet for Kids
Children ages 3-5 build early geometry vocabulary by learning to name and visually recognize five 3D shapes — cube, sphere, prism, cuboid, and pyramid — a step beyond the flat 2D shapes most preschool worksheets cover. Following a color-code instruction while coloring also strengthens their ability to hold and apply a rule, and the repeated coloring motion builds hand strength and control useful for future writing.
3D Shapes Matching Worksheet for Preschoolers
Connecting a flat, unfolded 2D net to the 3D shape it forms when folded builds spatial reasoning for children ages 3-5, an early introduction to geometry that helps them visualize how flat surfaces combine into solid forms like cubes and cones.
3D Shapes Worksheet: Explore Faces, Vertices, and Edges!
This worksheet pushes children ages 4-6 beyond simply naming 3D shapes into analyzing their structural properties — counting faces, vertices, and edges — while also connecting those properties to how each shape moves (rolling, sliding, or stacking). Understanding that a shape's number of flat surfaces and corners directly determines its physical behavior is an early but genuine geometric reasoning skill.
Shape Properties Worksheet: Identify and Match Shapes!
This worksheet moves beyond simply naming 3D shapes to analyzing their properties — counting faces, edges, and vertices — which builds the early geometric reasoning children need before formal geometry lessons. For four- to six-year-olds, learning that a cube has 6 faces while a sphere has none introduces the idea that shapes can be described by measurable features, not just their overall look.
3D Shapes Worksheet: Circle and Name the Shapes!
This worksheet helps children ages 4-6 identify common 3D shapes like spheres, cubes, and cylinders by matching them to real objects, then connects each 3D shape to its related 2D shape, such as a cube's square face or a sphere's circular outline. Understanding that 3D shapes are built from 2D shapes is an important early geometry concept that supports later spatial reasoning and measurement skills.
Cone Shape Worksheet for Preschoolers: Circle & Match!
This worksheet gives children ages 3-5 focused practice identifying the cone as a distinct 3D shape among a set of pictured objects, building the visual discrimination skills needed to tell shapes apart by their form rather than by color or size. Matching the shape to its printed word 'CONE' also introduces early print awareness, connecting a familiar geometric form to its written name.
Clothing Pattern Match Worksheet for Preschoolers
This worksheet has children ages 3-5 study repeating patterns on clothing items — stripes, polka dots, or checks — and match each item to its identical twin, building visual discrimination and early pattern-sequencing skills. Distinguishing between similar-looking patterns also sharpens attention to detail, a skill that later supports letter and word recognition.
Elephant Shapes: Fun Sorting Worksheet for Preschoolers!
This playful sorting worksheet has children ages 3-5 use an elephant's 'trunk' (their own hand reaching through a cut circle) to pick and sort shapes, building both shape recognition and simple classification skills. Physically selecting and grouping shapes by type, rather than just naming them on sight, helps solidify the concept that shapes can share a category even when their size or color differs.
