Pre-Writing Skills Practice Worksheet for Preschoolers

How to use this worksheet

Look through the whole page with your child first so they know what to expect before starting. Work through the strokes in order, generally left to right and top to bottom, tracing each one with a pencil while naming the type of line or shape it is. Take a short break partway through if your child's hand or attention starts to tire. Color or decorate the finished page once every stroke has been traced.

Extension activities

• 1Practice each stroke type again using a finger in a tray of sand, rice, or shaving cream.
• 2Create a 'stroke of the week' chart, focusing extra practice on whichever line type seemed hardest.
• 3Play a simple game where you draw a line in the air and your child guesses whether it's straight, curved, or zigzag.
• 4Set up an obstacle course with sections that mimic straight, curved, and zigzag paths to walk through.
• 5Practice the same strokes outside with sidewalk chalk at a larger, whole-arm scale.
