Read & Reveal: CVC Word Fun Worksheet for Preschoolers
Reading CVC words is the first real decoding milestone for children ages 3-5, and this 'Read & Reveal' worksheet turns that practice into a mini mystery. How to use this worksheet
Start by pointing to the first CVC word and sounding out each letter together — for example, 'c-a-t' — before blending it into the full word. Let your child guess what picture is hiding underneath based only on the word they just read. Have them cut along the dotted line and fold the flap up to reveal the picture and check their guess. Repeat for each word on the page, and celebrate every correct blend before moving to the next one.

- •Write three or four CVC words on index cards and hide a small toy or sticker under each one for your child to 'read to reveal.'
- •Play an oral blending game in the car: say a word sound-by-sound ('d-o-g') and have your child shout the blended word.
- •Ask your child to draw their own picture for one of the CVC words and write the word underneath from memory.
- •Sort a pile of toy or picture cards into 'I can read this word' and 'still tricky' piles, and revisit the tricky pile the next day.
Tips for parents and teachers
Watch whether your child blends sound-by-sound or is just guessing from the picture shape under the flap — if they peek early, cover the flap until they've said the word aloud. Choppy blending ('c...a...t' with long pauses) is normal at this age; gently model a smoother blend without correcting harshly. Keep sessions to five or six words so the game stays fun rather than tedious.
