Reception Subtraction Worksheets (Ages 4–5)
Reception subtraction worksheets are practice sheets for children aged 4–5 in Reception in the UK. Subtraction is taking a smaller group away from a larger one, or comparing two groups, to find how many or how much remain. The sheets on this page cover taking away from a group, counting back from a number, finding the difference between two numbers and fact families linked to addition.
Reception is the year phonics teaching properly begins, usually with Phase 2 of Letters and Sounds or an equivalent scheme, so a child starts blending sounds such as s, a, t and p into short words within weeks. Number work stays within ten, built through subitising and comparing rather than counting alone. At four to five, subtraction is something a child does with hands before it is anything on paper. A worksheet should show a small group of objects, five or fewer to begin with, mark some as taken away, and ask the child to count what remains and say the number. Is a four-year-old too young for subtraction worksheets?
Not if the sheet shows pictures rather than numbers. A four-year-old can take two toys from five and count the three left over, which is the whole idea of subtraction. What a child this age cannot yet do is read 5 − 2 = 3 as an instruction, or count backward. Keep every problem inside five, keep real objects beside the sheet, and let the answer come from counting the pictures that remain.
