Sight Word Coloring Worksheet: Make, For, Here, Our, From, and What!

This worksheet helps children ages 3-5 build automatic recognition of six common sight words — make, for, here, our, from, and what — words that show up constantly in early reading but don't always follow predictable phonics rules. Finding and coloring matching words hidden within pencil shapes trains visual discrimination between similar-looking short words, a skill that directly supports reading fluency.

Fluency > Sight Words

How to use this worksheet

Look at the sight words listed at the top of the page and read each one aloud together, noting the color example shown for each. Have your child scan the pencil shapes below, reading each word carefully to find one that matches a word from the top of the page. When they find a match, have them color that pencil the same color as the example, working through the page until every sight word has been found and colored.

Materials needed

  • Pencils
  • Crayons or colored pencils

Extension activities

  • •Have your child write each sight word independently on a separate piece of paper.
  • •Create short, simple sentences using each of the six sight words and read them together.
  • •Use the sight words in a game of 'I Spy,' hiding word cards around the room to find and read.
  • •Make matching flashcards for a quick daily practice round before or after another activity.

Tips for parents and teachers

Encourage your child to sound out the words as they search for matches, but also point out that these are words worth memorizing by sight since they appear so often in books. Make it a fun activity by racing the clock or celebrating each found match with enthusiasm. Praise their efforts throughout, since scanning a page full of similar-looking words for a specific match takes real visual focus at this age.

Sight Word Coloring Worksheet for Preschoolers

Sight WordsReading

This worksheet helps children ages 3-5 build sight-word recognition by having them read common high-frequency words and use a color key to decide how to color the corresponding pictures. Connecting a printed word to a coloring decision requires children to actually read and recall the word's meaning, rather than just copying or tracing it, which is a genuine step toward independent reading. The coloring format also keeps the repeated word-reading practice feeling like an art activity rather than a drill.

Sight Words Worksheet: Practice with 'is', 'we', and 'my'

Sight WordsWriting Skills

This worksheet challenges children ages 4-6 to choose the correct sight word from a small word bank — 'is,' 'we,' or 'my' — to complete a sentence, rather than simply tracing or copying a single word. Selecting the right word based on sentence meaning requires a deeper level of reading comprehension than earlier single-word practice, since children must understand what each sentence is saying before choosing correctly. Writing the chosen word from memory also builds spelling recall for these common words.

Sight WordsTracing

This worksheet builds sight-word fluency for the word 'my' in children ages 3-5 through a combination of tracing, independent writing, fill-in-the-blank sentences, and a matching activity. Working with the same word across several different formats helps cement recognition, since 'my' is a high-frequency word that appears constantly in early reading material but doesn't follow simple phonics patterns. The matching component adds a visual-recognition check to confirm the word sticks even without tracing cues.

Sight WordsTracing

This worksheet helps children ages 4-5 build instant recognition of the sight word 'is' through a layered sequence of tracing, independent writing, sentence fill-in, coloring, and letter-order cut-and-paste practice. Because 'is' can't easily be sounded out using typical phonics rules, repeated multi-format exposure like this is exactly what helps a sight word move into a child's automatic reading vocabulary. Using the word inside real sentence blanks also connects the isolated word to meaningful, functional reading.

Sight WordsColoring

This worksheet helps children ages 3-5 build automatic recognition of four common sight words — am, has, had, and have — words that appear so frequently in early reading that sounding them out every time would slow a beginning reader down.
