Five-year-olds handle grid mazes with several dead ends and can plan most of a route by eye before drawing. This is the age for mazes with a rule: follow the numbers 1 to 20 in order, move through the alphabet from A to Z, or take only the paths marked with pictures that start with a given sound. A tripod pencil grip should be in place while doing this. Dense mazes with long dead ends still frustrate. A child entering kindergarten typically writes their first name, recognizes most letters, counts a small group of objects accurately, knows basic shapes and colors, and follows a two-step spoken direction without needing it repeated.
