Reception Mazes Worksheets (Ages 4–5)

Because at four the hand moves before the eyes have checked the route, and the maze exists to reverse that order. Ask the child to point out the path with a finger before drawing, and praise noticing a dead end as much as reaching the finish. Use a crayon so there is nothing to erase, and if a maze ends in tears, choose one with fewer branches next time.

Between four and five the first real choices appear: two or three branches, short dead ends, a picture at the start and finish. The lesson is to look ahead with the eyes before the pencil moves, and to back out of a dead end and try again rather than giving up or crashing through a wall. Mazes that run through numbers 1 to 5 in order add a little counting. Dense grid mazes are still too much. A child moving into this stage typically holds a pencil with a developing grip, recognises several letters by sound rather than only by shape, and can count a small group of objects one at a time without skipping any.
