Kindergarten Sight Words Worksheets (Ages 5–6)

Around fifty by the end of the year is a common school target, with the most frequent twenty or so spelled as well as read. That covers the Dolch pre-primer and primer lists, or the tricky words from Letters and Sounds Phases 2 to 4. Numbers matter less than instant recognition: a child who reads twenty words without hesitation is further along than one who guesses at eighty.

This is the year sight words are learned in bulk. Children at five to six work through the first forty to fifty high-frequency words, the pre-primer list or the tricky words of the early phonics phases, at a pace of three to five a week. Worksheets should follow read, trace, write, find on one page and mix the new word with older ones. Expect slow, deliberate reading; expect spelling of "was" and "said" to still wobble. A child entering kindergarten typically writes their first name, recognizes most letters, counts a small group of objects accurately, knows basic shapes and colors, and follows a two-step spoken direction without needing it repeated.
